Nas, Common, Lauryn Hill, and More Perform at Rock the Bells Hip Hop Festival

This past weekend marked the Bay Area return of Rock the Bells, the annual festival that brings the latest and greatest names in hip hop together for a day filled with amazing music. With a line-up that boasted names that included Common, Blackstar, Nas, GZA, Lauryn Hill and more, it was a must see event for any hip hop fan.

Bay Area natives were in for a treat at the start of the festival as Oakland natives Souls of Mischief came out to perform their break through record, ’93 Till Infinity. The performance was filled with contagious energy as members Tajai, Opio, A-Plus, and Phesto performed across the main stage, reciting the album’s lyrics to the beat emanating from the speakers. Audience members were quickly engulfed in the sound of the group, nodding their heads back and forth and shouting along lyrics to a classic album over a decade old.

Sets by Common, Nas, and other performers on the main stage garnered the same kind of excitement that Souls of Mischief commanded, if not more. Performing classic records that included Be, Illmatic, and Blackstar, fans were given unforgettable performances of some of the most highly-regarded hip hop albums that have been released since the early 90s.

The day moved along between the main stage and three smaller stages, two of which were set up in the venue parking lot. Fans had the choice to watch members and associates of the legendary hip hop group, Wu Tang Clan, on the 36 Chambers stage, or check out rising stars including Blu, Fashawn, and Big K.R.I.T. on the Paid Dues stage.

As night fell, sun-soaked fans gathered together to watch the headliner, Lauryn Hill, perform her blockbuster album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The songstress took the stage and played well known singles with such energy and vigor with the help of an incredible band and talented backup singers. Although she didn’t quite have the same precision in her voice compared to her early years, the wave of nostalgia that swept over the audience as she played her songs was enough to hold the crowd.

Overall, the day was an impressive addition to an already stellar history of Rock the Bells performances leaving me looking forward to next year’s offering.

Artist to Watch - Esperanza Spalding

Esperanza Spalding isn’t a household name…yet. Coming off an impressive Grammy win over mainstream juggernauts Drake and Justin Bieber, Esperanza Spalding has been quietly building up her reputation through her silky voice, cool delivery, and overall pure musical talent.

One album that exudes the 27-year old bassists multiple talents is her second album, Esperanza. Combining sounds from various genres, Esperanza is a record formed from influences that stretch across jazz, neo-soul, and bossa nova, just to name a few. These influences can be heard throughout the album, but more prominently heard on songs such as “Cuerpa y Alma” and “Mela”.

Esperanza’s talent on the double-bass is another gem to be found on her self–titled record. She plays through complex bass lines with ease and precision, complimenting her jazz band perfectly. Not to be overlooked is Spalding’s smooth singing voice. She weaves through lyrics; bringing listener’s a classic, modern day sound reminiscent of Billie Holiday or Etta James. Her voice melts perfectly with the jazzy melody of her music.

Esperanza Spalding is an artist on the rise. Her natural voice and skills on the double-bass is a definite treat for any listener to enjoy. She's currently working on her next album with Q-Tip (of 'A Tribe Called Quest’) on production duties.

The brilliant color of fall leaves, the smell of the crisp autumn air, and the belly-stuffing Thanksgiving dinner are some of the things people gleefully look forward to. Among all the fall fun, November also marks the beginning of the holiday season. What better way to get into the holiday spirit than with some great seasonal music from Live365. Here are some of my personal favorites to get you in that holiday cheer:

Seasons and Celebrations: For those looking for the perfect fall soundtrack, look no further than Seasons and Celebrations. Broadcaster Thomas Callahan meticulously molds his playlist to reflect the feeling of the year's holidays and seasons through the music played on his station. Artists like Kenny G, Donovan, and John Denver supply the sounds that fit all your fall activities. During my time listening, it was great to hear tracks that brought me back to fond Thanksgiving memories while stirring my excitement for this year's festivities. Winterscapes: Winterscapes offers a fresh approach to the tradition of holiday music. While playing songs that appeal to the biggest Christmas music fan, the station does a great job mixing in various tracks that embody the winter season. Live365 is proud to present the Broadcaster Roadshow! On October 16th in San Francisco, Live365 will hold an all-day event that showcases the world of Internet radio.

Day Event
The Solarium, located near San Francisco's eclectic Mission district, plays host to the first half of the Broadcaster Roadshow. Highlights of the program include presentations centered on building a successful station and forming an audience. Live365's brightest minds will be on hand to deliver tips on subjects such as marketing your station and royalty coverage, just to name a few.

Attendees will get a sneak peek into the world of broadcasting with speeches from some of Live365's veteran broadcasters. The first half of the Roadshow will end with a Q&A panel and small group sessions, perfect for answering those burning questions.

Night Event
Continuing the festivities at night, Zigaboo - "King of the Funky Drums", brings the beat with a free concert performance at San Francisco's Minna Gallery! Starting at 6pm, enjoy the night listening to good music and mingling with great people over cocktails and appetizers.

Showcasing a handful of our dedicated broadcasters, the magazine serves as an in-depth look at the minds that fuel our creative stations. The first issue comes complete with trivia questions, listener surveys, and an exclusive interview with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull! We also feature a mix of album reviews and highlights of our PRO stations (Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and more). Live365 Spotlight: Classical

The Classical music genre has been one of the most organic forms of music throughout the centuries. From Beethoven to Bach, various composers have put together unique scores that have stood the test of time. With so many stations paying homage to these musical geniuses on Live365, it can be a harrowing task to choose which one to listen to. Here's a little insight on some personal favorite stations I have on rotation:

KCME-FM Classical Music: Those who are looking for a crash course in the history of Classical music, look no further than KCME-FM. The station plays all the best composers, new and old, that have contributed to Classical music. The interesting aspect about KCME is the fact that it does a great job varying between instrumental and vocal tracks. The DJ commentary - both concise and detailed - is also done well. To hear all the best from Classical music, tune in to KCME-FM.

Ave Maria: Based on the recommendation of a Classical music enthusiast at Live365, I stumbled upon this hidden gem. Concentrating solely on the song "Ave Maria", the radio station showcases various musicians' versions of the classic track. At first glance, it may seem a bit redundant hearing the same song over again, but the versions that are played are so unique, you can barely tell it was based on the same record. The highlight of "Ave Maria" is the diverse renditions that are played throughout. Musicians hailing from Mexico all the way to Austria all lend their talents to re-work the beautiful song. Tune in to the "Ave Maria" station to hear an assorted variety of the timeless track.

Baroque 24/7: From the 1600s to the 1750s, Baroque was a style that was utilized by many composers. For those looking to listen to the sound that shaped an era, "Baroque 24/7" plays the best. During my time listening, many of the songs exemplified the style of Baroque, utilizing melodic lines and harmonious workings between the different instruments. The music encompasses the listener in its sound, seemingly transporting them back to a time when the style of music ruled supreme. In addition, all songs are streamed in high-quality, allowing the listener to hear the subtle tinges of each track. So if Baroque style music is what you crave, listen in to "Baroque 24/7".

Johnny Cash Radio Arrives on Live365!

Live365 Spotlight: Indie Rock

Indie Rock has evolved into something larger over the years. The term Indie Rock has morphed into the description of a musical genre that has taken the country by storm. With hundreds of Live365 Indie Rock stations to listen to, you won't have any trouble finding a few that keep you coming back for more. To help you get started, here are my personal favorites:

Radio Free Cruze: If your taste varies between unknown bands and those with recognition, then "Radio Free Cruze" is the station for you. The music played has great variety within the rock genre, switching between radio-friendly alternative bands, to unknown acts waiting to be discovered. During my times listening, it was great to hear familiar songs paired with ones that piqued my new-music interest. If you're looking for a station that slides along the Alternative rock spectrum, look no further than "Radio Free Cruze".

Roo Radio: Looking for a station that offers a more mature approach to Alternative music? "Roo Radio" has you covered. Often playing songs by the likes of Coldplay, Jack Johnson, and Pearl Jam, "Roo Radio" caters to the most seasoned Alternative Rock Listeners. The station does a great job of highlighting Alternative songs from various decades. When Pearl Jam's "Even Flow" came on, I was instantly transported back to a time where flannel shirts and CDs ruled the Alternative music scene. To hear timeless Alternative songs, tune in to "Roo Radio".

Baby Indie: "Baby Indie" encompasses the true meaning of Indie Rock. Showcasing bands that are signed to small, independent labels, "Baby Indie" floods its listener with many noteworthy acts. One of the great things about the station is that I'm always positive I will walk away with a new band to look into. So if you're looking for some new music to fill your ipod, listen to "Baby Indie".

Channel 27 to Broadcast from Brighton Beach!

Channel 27 is celebrating 10 years of broadcasting! Powered by Live365, Channel 27 plays all the best in Adult Contemporary music. To mark their 10 year milestone, Channel 27 will be hitting the road for the United Kingdom's Brighton Beach. On July 11th, a special outside broadcast will be put on, live from the Brighton's Promenade.

Perhaps more known for their renowned Pier or delectable rock candy, Brighton Beach lays claim to a rich history of large-scale music events. From 1974's Eurovision Song Contest to Fatboy Slim's "Big Beach Boutique", Brighton has seen its fair share of acts. Come July 11th, Channel 27's live outside broadcast can be added to that list.

Channel 27's popular "Hit 30 Countdown" will be broadcast with a new twist for the special event. Along with counting down the thirty most popular songs of the week, the show will feature vocals from Brighton's many residents and visitors. Locals and tourists alike will be able to watch the festivities, including an opening act at 6pm, near the historic West Pier. For those who want to take part as audience members, the station is running a competition for those who are able to travel to the Brighton area. While broadcasting outside can seem like a daunting task, Channel 27 will be using the latest in audio technology to stream the show live on Live365.com. Updates for the show will run in conjunction on the channel27.net website. It is safe to say that the sheer excitement for the show and its fans shadows the intimidating technical job at hand. Executive Producer Nimmy Bear put it best, saying, "This outside broadcast is perhaps one of the most technically challenging we have attempted, especially given the live nature. However, we are planning on an evening of jolly good entertainment which out listeners at home will enjoy".

Coming Soon to Live365: Wendy & Lisa!

Live365 is ecstatic to announce the coming of Wendy and Lisa radio! Childhood friends, Wendy and Lisa both came from influential musical backgrounds. In 1983, Wendy and Lisa joined Prince and others to form Prince and the Revolution. The duo went on to record three hit records with the band, in addition to performing on various tours.

While Prince (BET's recipient of their 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award) may have been their claim to fame, Wendy and Lisa have definitely made a name for themselves. Often collaborating with other musical artists such as Eric Clapton and Sheryl Crow, Wendy and Lisa have been at the forefront of musical composition. Recently, they released their fifth full-length album, White Flags of Winter Chimneys. In addition to building their discography, Wendy and Lisa have been hard at work composing scores for various television shows such as, Heroes, Nurse Jackie, and Mercy.

According to Renata Kanclerz, manager of Girl Brothers Productions Inc., Wendy and Lisa's radio show will feature a "mix-style" format, incorporating about two hours of music, talk on today's hottest topics, and other elements of radio. Along with a "live" version of the show, listeners will also have the option to download podcasts, allowing them to listen whenever they please.

One of the best aspects about working at Live365 is the people we get to meet. From everyday broadcasters to musical artists, we all come together for the love of radio. Live365 Spotlight: Hip Hop Music

Hip Hop has come a long way since its humble beginning in New York City. With Live365 having dozens of Hip Hop radio stations to choose from, it can be a daunting task to pick one to listen to. I'm here to provide some insight on a few of my personal favorite Hip Hop stations.

Dope on Plastic: Even though Hip Hop has been around for more than twenty-five years, it still borrows from the music of yesterday. Whether it's sampling an old R&B song or using the same drum kit as an old gospel tune, Hip Hop has had elements of different genres for years. "Dope on Plastic" does a great job showcasing these songs. Artists such as Teena Marie and Jimi Hendrix had me reminiscing about the first time I listened to these talents. To hear essential songs from Hip Hop's history, tune in to "Dope on Plastic".

Jag FM: "Jag FM" is a station that caters specifically to today's hottest hits. Often playing contemporary songs, "Jag FM" showcases artists such as T-Pain, Kanye West, and Drake. While I was listening to the station, the infectious melody of Drake's "Find Your Love" had me singing along (under my breathe of course, so I could spare my cubicle neighbors my horrendous singing voice) . If you want to hear music from today's most popular rap stars, "Jag FM" has what you're looking for.

The Hip Hop Lounge: The early 90s were arguably the best age for Hip Hop. With acts like Black Star, De La Soul, and Hieroglyphics lending their skills to the microphone, Hip Hop hits were filled with talent and substance. "The Hip Hop Lounge" takes you back to the days of these icons. During my time listening, I was taken on a roller coaster ride through Hip Hop. One song had me nodding my head to Gangstarr's "Mass Appeal", while another song had me dissecting Tupac's powerful lyrics on "Keep ya Head up". The Hip Hop Lounge has easily become a personal favorite due to its playlist of classic Hip Hop tracks. To hear more timeless Hip Hop songs, check out "The Hip Hop Lounge".

Showcasing the music of the world, Putumayo has been one of the front leaders in bringing cultural music to the masses. Founded in 1993, the label has been releasing music that is usually upbeat and melodic. The Putumayo world music station plays songs from different cultures all over the world. Listeners will hear global artists from Africa, Greece, and Spain, just to name a few. To listen to music with a cultural edge, tune in to "Putumayo World Music".

Cherry Tree Records: An imprint of Interscope Records, Cherry Tree Records is associated with some of today's hottest artists. Their radio station, "Cherry Tree Radio" plays the best in pop-alternative music. Artists like Lady GaGa, Keane, and LMFAO can be heard playing on "Cherry Tree Radio". If you're looking for today's hits and yesterdays classics, listen to "Cherry Tree Radio".

Giving a Voice to Niche Broadcasters...

I’ve been working at Live365 in the PRO broadcasting department for the past couple of years. In that time I’ve worked with many big names in broadcasting, major artists and brands. But some of the most interesting clients have been the more niche based broadcasters who cater to their specific communities, such as various African diasporas in the U.S., the "Voice of Ireland," faith-based communities (of many different faiths). The single station that has stayed in my mind the most though is one catering to the Michif-Cree speaking people of Saskatchewan, CA.

Michif-Cree is the language of the Métis people who are descendants of First Nations (mainly Cree, Nakota and Ojibwe) and French Canadian and Scottish Canadian speaking fur traders. There are less than 1000 Michef-Cree speakers left in the world today, most of them in Canada, but there are also about 230 speakers in the United States, most based in North Dakota. At its peak around the turn of the last century there were no more than 2-3000 speakers. The professed goal of the station is “to give others an opportunity to hear and hopefully learn Michif so that we can try to preserve the language as long as possible”. It’s so great that Live365 is able to give unique broadcasters like this a voice to reach their communities.

Raising Money and Awareness with Live365 (UNICEF Tap Project)

Internet Radio is more than just an entertainment platform. It can also be used by organizations and non-profits to raise money and awareness.

In our world today, more than 900 million people lack access to clean drinking water. Half of those are children. To help bring clean water to countries all over the world, UNICEF created the Tap Project. The UNICEF Tap Project (http://www.tapproject.org) is a grassroots initiative that takes place every year during World Water Week. This year the Tap Project took place March 21-27, 2010. The Tap Project invites individuals to donate $1 or more for tap water at participating restaurants to provide clean water to children around the world. In addition to galvanizing restaurants around the country, UNICEF created an Internet radio station where celebrity DJs like Lucy Liu and Pete Wentz spun their favorite music and asked for donations for the cause (http://www.tapprojectradio.com). The donate link on the player helped raise additional funds for the project.

UNICEF used Live365’s Professional Broadcasting services (http://www.live365.com/pro) to build and distribute the station worldwide. In addition, Live365 promoted the station on its website of 3.5 million listeners and delivered close to 2 million impressions to the Tap Project website. The Live365 team worked with Chiat Day, UNICEF's ad agency, to ensure the project was a success.

It's Spring, and There's Music Everywhere

Spring is in the air... I walked my kids to school in the midst of April showers, and by the time I got into my car to drive to work, the sun was shining. Like Spring weather, the tech world is ever-evolving and constantly creating new options that never existed before.

A lot of people don't even know how much Live365 has evolved. In fact, just take the word "internet" out of "internet radio," because no one really cares any more how they get their content. They just want it EVERYWHERE. I had a lot of fun the first time I used the iPhone app for Live365 - on my iPod Touch using WiFi (because I don't have an iPhone -- but that's a different story.) I had just bought one of those nifty little iPod speaker systems, and now not only can I listen to my favorite playlists, but I can hear 6000+ radio stations over the speakers in my house as well.

On the music everywhere topic: Check out the recent Arbitron/Edison Research report "The Infinite Dial." They say that nearly one in four Americans has listened to audio from an iPod or other MP3 player connected to a car stereo... and 6% have done the same with internet radio. The Dot-Com That Could...

Here’s a story about a relatively small company with a very big mission called Live365. This story is interesting for a few reasons, the main reason being that no one’s taken the time to tell it for several years. In fact, most stories told about Live365 lately have been spread by word-of-mouth, Facebook, and Twitter.

Interesting Tidbit #1: Live365 was spawned in 1999, during the famous (or infamous) dot-com bubble years. Remember the dot-com flops? Webvan. Pets.com. eToys. The list goes on and on. Unlike other bubble era companies, Live365 didn’t file bankruptcy. It wasn’t even gobbled up by a bigger company. In fact, a new CEO, Mark Lam, entered the scene in 2004 and turned the company into a lean and mean machine. And lo and behold, it’s been profitable for several years. Few companies involved in digital media or digital music have been around as long or managed to make money for as long.

Interesting Tidbit #2: Live365 powers custom Internet radio stations or initiatives by some very big names. Brands like Bacardi and Sony’s Legacy Recordings, to name just a few. Artists like Santana, Pat Metheny, Frank Zappa, Third Eye Blind, and Roy Orbison. Major church groups. The company is also getting some traction, thanks to Apple's iPhone and iTunes.

Interesting Tidbit #3: Live365 is the world’s largest Internet radio network. (I welcome any challenges to this claim.) It’s got more than 6000 broadcast stations, both professional and consumer, spanning 250+ genres. Long tail content? You got it. Top 40 music, you got it. AND, here’s the kicker: Live365 doesn’t just handle the underlying technical delivery of all this content, it also serves the content legally by managing payments on behalf of copyright holders and performers to BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, and SoundExchange. So, even though increasing royalty obligations are making it harder and harder for Internet broadcasters to do business, Live365 continues to fight the good fight in this important and ever-evolving issue. Just this morning, a fleet of lawyers is off to Washington D.C. to participate on behalf of Live365 in negotiations with the Copyright Royalty Board. The goal: make it possible for the company to keep streaming its 6000+ stations, so that independent broadcasters can have a voice in this great democracy of ours. Stay tuned for more updates on this issue.

Lessons of the week: All in all, when I signed on to help out with marketing just a week ago, I didn’t really know just how cool Live365 was. Every day since then I’ve learned more and more about what’s under the hood, and I’m impressed. Yes, there is much work to do. The website still looks like it was designed in 1999 — that will change soon. On the listener side, Live365 may not have some of the interactive features that some people would like to see, but the flip side is that it’s got more variety of content, and you can enjoy the “hands-free” experience of radio — much easier for listening while driving, brushing your teeth, or making out with your main squeeze, for example.
